Cambridge vs Edexcel IGCSE Science: What Changes in Revision?
A practical comparison of the documents, paper structure, command words, practical skills, and past-paper habits students should check before revising IGCSE science.
First check the qualification - the logo is not enough
“Cambridge” and “Edexcel” identify awarding organisations, not a complete exam route. A student also needs the subject, syllabus or specification code, grading route where relevant, and exam series. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE is also different from Pearson Edexcel GCSE. Build the revision plan from the exact current document named by the school.
- Write the full qualification name and subject.
- Record the syllabus or specification code shown by the school.
- Confirm which papers, tiers, or components apply to the student.
- Check the examination year before using a syllabus, specification, or paper.
Do not buy resources or build a past-paper timetable until the exact route is written down.
Turn the official document into a coverage map
Both routes publish the content and assessment expectations, but the organisation and wording are not interchangeable. Make a simple list with three columns: specification point, last evidence, and next check. Use the wording from the student’s own board rather than translating a checklist made for another qualification.
- Green: recently secure in marked work.
- Amber: partly correct or inconsistent.
- Red: below the agreed threshold or not yet tested.
- Blank: no evidence - do not turn this into green because the topic feels familiar.
Match practice to the actual paper structure
The number, weighting, length, and purpose of papers can differ by board, subject, and route. For example, Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 uses separate multiple-choice, theory, and practical or alternative-to-practical components. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology uses two written papers, with practical understanding assessed through questions in those papers. A generic stack of “IGCSE questions” will not train the right sequence, pace, or paper decisions.
- Practise short sections before attempting complete papers.
- Record the paper or component on every marked attempt.
- Use the timing and equipment rules from the current official document.
- Only compare scores from work with a similar structure and level of demand.
Learn command words from the board, then test the answer
Many command words overlap, but students should use the definitions and examples supplied for their own route. Cambridge defines “explain” around purposes, reasons, relationships, and relevant evidence. Pearson science guidance likewise expects the student to say how or why something happens. The useful habit is not memorising a slogan; it is checking whether the written answer actually contains the requested relationship, comparison, calculation, or judgement.
- Circle the command word before answering.
- Underline the evidence or context that must be used.
- Compare the response with the official mark scheme.
- Rewrite one missed answer and state what changed.
Practical revision still needs board-specific practice
A written practical question is not revised by reading experiment notes. The student must interpret methods, variables, measurements, tables, graphs, risks, limitations, and improvements in the form used by the board. Cambridge 0610 candidates take either a Practical Test or an Alternative to Practical paper, both assessing the same experimental skills. Pearson publishes named core-practical guidance and assesses practical knowledge within its written-paper route.
- Build a list of required experimental contexts from the current board document.
- Practise drawing tables and graphs without copying a finished example.
- For every improvement, name what changes, how it changes, and why it improves the evidence.
- Use official or school-authorised questions for the correct board and route.
Use a board-switch check when changing schools or tutors
A student who changes school, qualification, or tutor should not assume previous coverage maps directly onto the new route. Compare the two official documents, then test the areas that moved, changed depth, or use a different assessment pattern. Much of the science may transfer; the exam preparation still needs to be rebuilt around the destination board.
- Bring the current syllabus or specification code to the first planning conversation.
- Bring one recent marked paper with its paper code.
- Identify content gaps separately from paper-technique gaps.
- Set the first four weeks from evidence rather than restarting the entire course.
The best revision method is not “Cambridge style” or “Edexcel style” in the abstract. It is practice matched to the student’s exact current route and corrected with that route’s evidence.
