IGCSE Chemistry Calculations: The Five-Line Error Check

A reusable five-line method for catching formula, conversion, substitution, unit, and reasonableness errors in IGCSE Chemistry calculations.

Use five visible lines, even when the answer feels obvious

Many chemistry calculation errors happen before the calculator is used. A five-line structure makes the decision process visible: relationship, conversion, substitution, answer, and check. It also makes a wrong answer easier to diagnose because the first broken line can be identified.

  • Line 1 - relationship: write the equation, ratio, or quantity being used.
  • Line 2 - conversion: put every value into the unit needed for that relationship.
  • Line 3 - substitution: place the numbers into the relationship before calculating.
  • Line 4 - answer: show the value with a unit and sensible significant figures.
  • Line 5 - check: decide whether the size and direction of the answer make sense.
A calculator can confirm arithmetic. It cannot tell you that the wrong relationship or unit went into it.

Check 1: did you choose the right relationship?

Name what is being found before selecting a formula. Concentration, amount in moles, mass, gas volume, percentage yield, and rate do not share one universal setup. If a balanced equation is involved, write it and use the coefficients as a mole ratio - not as a mass ratio.

  • Underline the requested quantity and unit.
  • List the quantities supplied by the question.
  • Write the relationship in symbols or words.
  • If there is a reaction, balance the equation before using its ratio.

Check 2: are the values in compatible units?

Write conversions as a separate line. Hiding them inside calculator input makes errors hard to see. The required conversion depends on the relationship and the convention used by the student’s exam board, so keep the target unit next to the formula.

  • Volume: check whether the relationship expects dm³ or cm³.
  • Mass: check whether a value is in grams, kilograms, or milligrams.
  • Time: check whether the rate uses seconds or minutes.
  • Percentage: decide whether to use a percentage value or a decimal fraction.
Never write only “÷1000”. Write what was converted, from which unit, and into which unit.

Check 3: does the substitution preserve the structure?

Copy the relationship, then substitute. This catches inverted fractions, missing brackets, and numbers attached to the wrong quantity. Keep extra precision in the working and round only the final answer unless the question tells you otherwise.

  • Use brackets when substituting a multi-part value.
  • Keep the equals signs aligned so each line follows from the previous one.
  • Do not replace a ratio with a number until the balanced equation is visible.
  • If the calculator result changes wildly after re-entry, inspect the structure before trying again.

Check 4: does the final answer carry enough information?

A number without its meaning is unfinished. Add the correct unit where required and use a sensible number of significant figures. If the question asks for working, a correct number alone may not show the method that produced it.

  • Copy the requested unit from the question, then verify it matches the calculation.
  • Use a leading zero for values smaller than one.
  • Round at the end rather than at each intermediate step.
  • Make the final answer easy to locate without crossing out the working that supports it.

Check 5: is the result chemically reasonable?

Estimate before accepting the display. A percentage yield above 100%, a negative mass, or a product amount that ignores the limiting ratio should trigger another look. Reasonableness is not guesswork; it is a comparison with the information and constraints in the question.

  • Should the answer be larger or smaller than the starting value?
  • Is the order of magnitude plausible after the unit conversion?
  • Does the mole ratio increase, decrease, or preserve the amount?
  • Is the answer inside a natural limit such as 0-100%?

Turn each error into a labelled retest

When a calculation is wrong, label the first line that failed: relationship, conversion, substitution, answer, or check. Correct it, then complete a different question that tests the same failure two or three days later. A page of copied corrections is not yet a changed habit.

  • Record the topic and the failed line in an error log.
  • Write one sentence describing what will change next time.
  • Choose a fresh question with the same calculation decision.
  • Mark the retest and keep it beside the original attempt.
The five-line check is successful when the same labelled error stops appearing - not when the checklist has been memorised.
