The First 30 Days of IGCSE Science: A Weekly Study Plan
A four-week start-of-term plan for IGCSE Biology, Chemistry, and Physics that turns the syllabus, marked work, and a small weekly routine into useful evidence.
Before week one: name the exact route
Do not begin with a colour-coded timetable. Begin with the qualification the student will actually sit. Write down the subject, exam board, syllabus or specification code, tier or route, and likely exam series. Then ask the school for the teaching order and date of the first assessed piece of work.
This takes less than an hour and prevents a common mistake: spending time on material that belongs to another board, route, or point in the course.
- Record the full qualification, not only “IGCSE science”.
- Save the current official syllabus or specification in one reliable place.
- List every paper or component the student expects to sit.
- Add the first school test, mock, or progress check to the calendar.
- Write down the first four topics in the school teaching order.
Finish line: the student can name the board, route, papers, and next assessment without guessing.
Week one: build a baseline from work, not confidence
Choose one recently taught topic in each science. Complete a short set of questions without notes, mark it, and classify every lost mark. “I knew it” and “careless” are not useful categories. Name what actually failed: recall, command word, calculation setup, unit, graph reading, practical method, or explanation chain.
- Use 20 to 30 minutes of questions per subject rather than a whole paper.
- Record the score and the exact reason for each lost mark.
- Choose one recurring error per subject to repair first.
- Keep the marked attempt; it is the evidence against which progress will be checked.
Week two: install the three-session loop
Use three short sessions for the weakest current topic. Each session has a different job. The first retrieves and rebuilds the idea. The second applies it to exam questions. The third corrects and retests. Repeating the same kind of revision three times is not the same as completing this loop.
- Session A - 25 minutes: write what you know from memory, check it, then repair only the missing parts.
- Session B - 35 minutes: answer a focused set of questions and mark it straight away.
- Session C - 20 minutes: redo two missed questions without notes and explain one correction aloud.
- Leave at least one day between the first attempt and the retest.
A useful weekly plan names the topic, question set, and finish line. “Revise Chemistry for one hour” does not.
Week three: turn feedback into a second attempt
Feedback only becomes useful when it changes the next answer. Collect one school task, homework, or practice set that has been marked. For every correction, decide what must be different next time. Then schedule a new question that tests the same skill in a different context.
- Knowledge gap: retrieve the missing idea, then answer a fresh question.
- Command-word gap: rewrite the answer to match what the verb asks for.
- Calculation gap: show the formula, substitution, working, answer, and unit.
- Practical gap: identify the variable, measurement, control, risk, or evaluation point that was missing.
- Timing gap: repeat a similar question with a visible time limit.
Week four: review the evidence and set October priorities
Repeat the short baseline from week one with new questions at a similar level. Compare reasons for lost marks, not only total scores. A small score increase with fewer repeated errors is useful progress. A higher score caused by easier questions is not yet evidence.
Keep the routine that produced a visible correction. Replace the part that was repeatedly skipped, too long, or too vague.
- Which error appeared less often on the second attempt?
- Which topic still has no marked evidence?
- Which session was regularly postponed, and why?
- What is the single priority before the first school assessment?
- What help is needed from the teacher, tutor, or parent?
The parent check-in: ask for evidence, not hours
A five-minute weekly check is enough. Ask the student to show one marked attempt, one correction, and the next scheduled question. This keeps the conversation concrete without turning the parent into a daily revision monitor.

- Is there anything you need help arranging?
After 30 days, the goal is not to be ahead of the course. It is to know the route, produce marked evidence, and run a correction loop without a crisis.
