IGCSE to A-Level Science: The Transition Checklist

A practical summer audit for students moving into A-Level Biology, Chemistry, or Physics: what to organise, test, and repair before lessons accelerate.

Start with the route, not the textbook

A-Level science is not simply more IGCSE content. The pace is faster, explanations carry more weight, and small gaps in algebra, graphs, practical work, or scientific language become expensive. Before revising a topic, write down the exact board, specification, subject combination, and first school assessment date.

  • Confirm the exam board and current specification with the school.
  • List every subject being started and the first six taught topics.
  • Collect the calculator, data booklet, formula sheet, or periodic table used by that board.
  • Put the first internal test or baseline assessment in the calendar.
If the exact exam route is unclear, more revision hours will not fix the problem. Clarify the route first.

Test the transferable skills

The most useful summer check is not a full A-Level paper. It is a short audit of skills that appear across many topics. Use marked work rather than confidence alone: complete a question, mark it carefully, and record why each mark was lost.

  • Rearrange equations and work confidently with standard form.
  • Read gradients, rates, uncertainties, and trends from graphs and tables.
  • Use units consistently and show enough working for method marks.
  • Separate describe, explain, compare, calculate, and evaluate answers.
  • Identify independent, dependent, and controlled variables in practical work.

Repair only the gaps that will travel

Do not try to repeat an entire IGCSE course. Choose three gaps that will recur. A Chemistry student may prioritise moles, equations, and bonding. A Physics student may prioritise algebra, graphs, and energy. A Biology student may prioritise membranes, enzymes, and data interpretation. The choice should follow marked evidence and the school sequence.

  • Name the gap precisely: “percentage yield setup,” not “calculations.”
  • Review one explanation or worked example.
  • Complete three to five questions without notes.
  • Mark the work and redo missed questions after two or three days.

Build a weekly loop before term starts

A sustainable loop beats a heroic final week. Use one short session to retrieve knowledge, one to answer exam questions, and one to correct mistakes. Keep an error log with the topic, lost mark, reason, and next check date. The log should become shorter and more specific over time.

  • Session 1: recall the idea without notes, then fill gaps.
  • Session 2: complete focused questions under light time pressure.
  • Session 3: mark, diagnose, and redo the weakest question.
  • End the week by scheduling the next test of the same gap.
The goal for summer is not to finish A-Level early. It is to enter September with a clear route, fewer travelling gaps, and a repeatable paper habit.
